The oven self-clean cycle reaches 900°F — well above the 350–500°F temperatures used for cooking. This extreme thermal stress is the single most common cause of oven failure in Los Angeles. Thermal fuses, oven sensors, and control boards that survive years of normal use frequently fail during or immediately after a self-clean cycle.
At self-clean temperatures, the thermal fuse — rated at approximately 300–350°F for normal operation — experiences extreme stress. In ovens over 10 years old, the fuse's thermal compound degrades over time, making it vulnerable to single high-temperature events. Control board capacitors, rated for 85–105°C, can also fail when radiated heat from the oven cavity reaches the board housing during self-clean.
A healthy gas oven igniter draws 3.2–3.6 amps at 120V, reaching sufficient current to open the gas safety valve within 90 seconds of calling for heat. As igniters age, their resistance increases — drawing insufficient current to open the valve. The oven appears to ignite (the igniter glows) but the burner never lights.
Test: set oven to 350°F, open the door slightly, and count seconds from ignition call to burner lighting. Over 90 seconds means the igniter is weak and must be replaced before it fails completely.
Baking soda paste: apply a mixture of baking soda and water to oven interior, leave overnight, wipe clean. Commercial oven cleaner: effective but requires thorough rinsing to prevent fume damage to heating elements. A&Y recommends manual cleaning for all ovens over 10 years old — the repair cost of self-clean damage ($200–$500) far exceeds the effort of manual cleaning.
If your oven won't heat after a self-clean cycle, the thermal fuse has almost certainly blown. This is a straightforward repair — $150–$200 including the $85 diagnostic applied toward repair. A&Y carries OEM thermal fuses for all major brands for same-day repair.
“My oven control panel went out on a Saturday morning. I called A&Y , explained my situation and was told a tech would be at my house between 1 & 3. I got a ping and was told he’d be there at 1:15. Mikayel was at my door right on time. He looked at my oven and had it up and running in 15 minutes. He was very pleasant and knowledgeable and the entire repair was done in less than 30 minutes. Great communications both on the phone and via text. A great experience, and I won’t hesitate to call themthe next time I need help Dan”
