A Pasadena homeowner’s Whirlpool front-load gas dryer had started making a loud noise on every cycle. The request came in through Google on a Friday afternoon; by 11 on Saturday morning the dryer was quiet again. Here’s what a noisy dryer looks like from the inside — and why the noise was the smaller of the two problems.
The lead arrived through Google Local Services at 4:01 on a Friday afternoon with a model number and a one-line description. Our booking system confirmed a Saturday 9-to-11 window within the minute, and the technician checked in at 10:12 Saturday morning. Total time on site: 46 minutes.

A dryer has exactly one moving system: a motor turns a belt that turns the drum, and a small spring-loaded wheel — the idler pulley — keeps that belt tight. The idler pulley spins every second the dryer runs, on a small bearing, inside a hot, linty box. When the bearing wears, the pulley starts to squeal, then roar, and eventually seizes and shreds the belt. This one was well along.

The second finding was the one nobody had called about. With the drum out, the cabinet floor and the burner area were carpeted in lint — the fine stuff that slips past the screen on every load and settles around the motor, the blower and, on a gas dryer, the burner. That isn’t a noise problem. That is fuel for a dryer fire, sitting next to the flame.

New idler pulley — the Whirlpool part is $58 — belt inspected, the full cabinet vacuumed and brushed clean, blower and burner area cleared, drum back in, test cycle: quiet. $323 total: $260 for the cleaning and installation, $58 for the pulley, with the $85 diagnostic credited toward the work. For context, the median dryer repair in our records is $335.
Two things. A dryer that suddenly gets loud is telling you a bearing is dying — the idler pulley, a drum roller or the rear drum bearing — and it is a cheap repair right up until the belt shreds or the motor overheats. And a dryer that has run for years without the cabinet opened has lint where you cannot see it, no matter how faithfully the screen gets cleaned. In our own records, 173 of the 1,187 dryer jobs we have done — 15% — came in as noise complaints.
