LADWP delivers water at 230–310 mg/L — among the hardest in the United States. Most appliance manufacturers calibrate their products for water at 50–150 mg/L. The result: appliances in Los Angeles wear out faster, perform worse, and require more frequent service than the same models anywhere else in the country.
Calcium and magnesium minerals dissolved in water deposit as scale on every surface water touches — inlet valves, spray arms, heating elements, drum seals, ice maker trays. Over time, scale narrows water flow, reduces heat transfer efficiency, and causes components to work harder and fail sooner. LADWP water at 230–310 mg/L deposits roughly 3–5× more scale than the water dishwashers, washing machines, and refrigerators are designed for.
The water inlet valve is a small $80–$150 solenoid valve that opens to fill the ice maker and water dispenser. Scale narrows the valve aperture, reducing flow until the ice maker stops working entirely. This is misdiagnosed as ice maker module failure ($400+) in over 70% of LA service calls. A&Y tests the inlet valve first on every refrigerator call — saving most customers $250–$300.
Dishwasher spray arm nozzles are as small as 0.5mm in diameter. LADWP scale blocks these nozzles progressively, reducing cleaning performance on the top rack first (upper arm nozzles are smaller). Scale also coats heating elements, reducing drying performance. Annual descaling is recommended for all LA dishwashers — especially Bosch, Miele, and ASKO units designed for European soft water.
Scale builds in the water inlet valve, drum door seal, and detergent drawer. Front-load washers are more affected than top-load units because their door seals accumulate both scale and detergent residue. The 4E/4C error on Samsung washers and the IE error on LG washers are almost always caused by a scaled inlet valve — not a failed control board.
Install a whole-house water softener — the only permanent solution. Change water filters every 6 months instead of 12 (LADWP hardness clogs filters 2–3× faster than the national average). Run your dishwasher with a rinse aid calibrated for hard water. Have your appliances serviced annually — A&Y's LA hard water diagnostic catches scale buildup before it causes component failure.
