White residue on glasses and dishes is the most common dishwasher complaint in Los Angeles. LADWP water at 230–310 mg/L deposits calcium and magnesium on every surface the water touches. But not all white residue is the same — and the difference determines whether your glasses can be saved.
Wet your finger and rub the white residue on a cloudy glass. If it wipes away — it's limescale (calcium carbonate deposit). Reversible with the right treatment. If it doesn't wipe away and the glass feels rough or pitted — it's etching. Permanent glass damage from alkaline detergent reacting with soft glass in the presence of hot soft water. Etched glasses cannot be restored.
In LA, limescale is far more common than etching because LADWP water is hard, not soft. Hard water + correct detergent dose = limescale. Soft water + too much detergent = etching.
Run an empty dishwasher with 2 cups of white vinegar in the bottom rack — no detergent. The acid dissolves calcium deposits from spray arms, heating elements, and the filter. Repeat monthly for LA homes. For severe buildup, A&Y's descaling service removes scale from spray arm nozzles (as small as 0.5mm), the filter assembly, and the heating element coating.
Limescale in LA dishwashers doesn't just coat surfaces — it physically blocks the spray arm nozzles. Upper spray arm nozzles are smaller than lower arm nozzles and block first, causing poor top-rack cleaning performance. This is misdiagnosed as a water pressure or wash motor issue. A&Y inspects and descales spray arms on every dishwasher service call.
European dishwasher brands — Bosch, Miele, ASKO — have built-in water softeners calibrated for European water hardness. In LA, these softeners need recalibration to a higher hardness setting and more frequent salt/resin replenishment. A&Y calibrates the internal water softener for LADWP conditions on every Bosch, Miele, and ASKO service call.
“A&Y Appliances came out on a Saturday to help with a washer that was spraying water everywhere. They had to order a part in order to complete the x, but returned a few days later to put everything back in place. Friendly, ecient, courteous -- a very nice experience with them from a very unpleasant experience with the washer!”
“Very nice company to work with. I had a problem with my washing machine Friday night and Eugene arrived an hour later which I much appreciated and took care of the problem as best he could. I highly recommend A&Y”
